Throughout the city of Yazd there are many of these pillars separated by a dome. These odd-looking structures are quite interesting in that they are the earliest form of air conditioners and fridges. The idea behind the structure is that as air passes, it enters the slits in the pillars. That air then passes through the column and into the dome keeping the dome cool. This was perfect because it is a natural way of cooling food or people before the advent of electricity. I was able to walk down into one of these domes, and I was really surprised as to how cold they really get. This is another example of the incredible ingenuity and creativity that is seen throughout the city.
Yazd is full of rich history, incredible architecture, and amazing sites to see. Please come along with me on my journey through Yazd and some of the other cities in Iran.
