Like many things I purchase, sometimes it feels like it would be much harder to make at home. Whenever I go out, I always like to have ginger ale in the house. The only challenge with some canned versions of ginger ale is that it is nothing but sugar, and I question if ginger or ginger flavoring is in each can. After playing around with the recipe, I think it is ready to share.
This recipe only calls for five ingredients and can be made in 15 – 30 minutes.
Ingredients:
- Maple syrup
- 2 lemons
- 1 cup of sliced ginger
- 4-5 cups of water
- Carbonated water
To start, add 4-5 cups of water to a pot and bring it to a boil. While the water is coming to a boil, this is the perfect time to slice the ginger. I prefer to slice ginger as finely as possible, and I left the skin on. Depending on your preference, the skin can be removed. Once the water is boiling, add 1 cup of sliced ginger and bring the water to a simmer.
From here, there are two options: the fast or the slow. For the quicker option, allow the water to simmer for 5 minutes, filter out the ginger and add ice. The slower option would be to turn off the heat and let the ginger water simmer as it cools. If you have the time, going this way brings out a little more of the flavor of the ginger.
In a pitcher, add 3-4 tablespoons of maple syrup and add the juice from both lemons into the pitcher. I found 3-4 tablespoons of maple syrup were just enough for me, but depending on personal preference, a little more sweetening can’t hurt. Once the ginger water is cooled, add it to the pitcher. At this point, the pitcher should be almost full. When ready for a glass of ginger ale, add one part of the ginger drink with one part of carbonated water. My carbonated water of choice is Pellegrino.
There you have it, a simple, healthy, and quick ginger ale that is perfect for any occasion.
